About the Fellowship
The EA Summer Communications Fellowship is a two-month, in-person summer program (July 1st-August 31st) sponsored by Open Philanthropy for comms-oriented EAs to work on high-impact comms projects, upskill, and grow their networks.
Who is this for?
- "Communications" is a wide category that includes any work broadly pertaining to how EA is viewed by the public at large — it includes the work of journalists, writers, filmmakers and people in entertainment, community builders, lobbyists and government advocates, marketers, fundraisers, artists and more. If you are interested in or already working on communicating about EA to people outside the movement, you’re probably a good fit! If you're not sure, please err on the side of applying.
How is the fellowship structured?
- We will partner small groups of fellows with mentors to work on promising EA communications projects in a range of fields.
- Fellows spend ~7 hours every weekday working on projects.
- Mentors will meet with fellows regularly.
- Fellows will co-work together in shared office space.
- We will pair fellows with mentors/projects based on their interests and skills (for example, an aspiring journalist with an established EA journalist working on crafting articles to demystify EA ideas for skeptics). We will consult fellows closely about which project they’re most excited to work on. (See below for lists of example projects)
- Fellows will have meals together regularly.
- Fellows will meet with staff every week, individually and as groups, to talk about what they’re working on. They’ll also meet with their mentors regularly for guidance on their projects.
- EA comms professionals will periodically visit the fellowship to give talks, run workshops, provide mentorship, and share meals with fellows.
- Midway through the program, there will be a summit for EA comms professionals, in which we’ll bring prominent EA journalists, EAs in entertainment, and other key players in EA comms together to talk about the movement’s communications strategy.
- Weekend activities:
- Fellows will go on some day trips (hikes, museums, etc.) to get to know each other better.
- For the most part, fellows will be free to do what they want with their weekends.

What happens after the fellowship?
- We are invested in supporting fellows who want to pursue careers in various comms fields after the fellowship by connecting them with people, opportunities, resources, and career counseling.
- If you apply to the fellowship and are not accepted, we still may be able to provide support in the form of career advice and connections. Feel free to reach out to Zeke Reffe-Hogan at [email protected]. We may reach out to you with ideas for ways we can help.
Who Can Apply?
We welcome EAs in the early stages of their careers and EAs currently in undergraduate or graduate programs to apply to the fellowship.
While we expect the fellowship to be a 35 hour per week commitment, we can be flexible on this for applicants who will also be doing another job remotely from the fellowship.
Housing & Compensation
Housing, reimbursement for travel to and from the fellowship, and office space will be provided, along with a $6,000 USD stipend.
For fellows working part-time, we’ll prorate their stipend accordingly.
